graypants hosts fashion benefit party

Friday, September 18th, 2009

noah cooley organized and led the urban rest stop fashion show at the graypants studio on wednesday, september 9th.  this was a chance for the 25 attendees to come together, be creative, enjoy some good food, and help raise funds and clothing supplies for the urban rest stop.  we paired off into 10 teams and each came up with a theme under the umbrella concept of DISSONANCE which drove the designers and models to develop new ideas and combinations using everyday garments.  the event was a big success fit with a rooftop runway lined with shoes, spotlights, a photographer, and of course dj nick robin.  nice work cooley!

most of us know this corner

Saturday, August 29th, 2009

It’s my favorite corner in Seattle. Yeah, I know – It’s that decrepit old building at Pine + 11th, and most of us Capitol Hill residents have been waiting for years to finally see it replaced or at least used for something other than a plasterboard for posters and graffiti. Somehow, though, it’s become a cultural staple in the neighborhood for me, and I look forward to walking by it every day.

As of about a month ago now, it has been slated to be developed as a mix of retail and artist housing. This is great news, but Capitol Hill needs this to be a successful project.  I’m grateful that the design for the new 6-story building will preserve and make use of the original building’s facade, but PLEASE – let’s do this right.

500 pine party

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009

the fun patrol of seattle won 10k to throw a huge party all of which was documented by a film crew to be used in jansport’s ads and commercials. they won the cash for deciding to celebrate a creative street block that once housed some of seattle’s best bars. last year that block was demolished and replaced by a parking lot, the ceremonial burial ground of Capitol Hill nightlife. graypants donated some of their ideas, time, and scraplights for one special night on august 20th to celebrate that old block where we once roamed. the end result was a reconstructed street facade with beautiful colors, textures, and very familiar entrances.

a little bit goes a long way

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

as part of oska architects’ most recent contribution to the community, a scrap light was featured in a silent auction held at the firm’s office. the effort was part of food frenzy – a friendly competition between local firms to raise food and funds for hungry children and families in western washington. at the end of the day, the auction raised enough money to provide over 65,000 meals to washington children.

65,000 - a little bit really can go a long way.

food frenzy is an annual event organized by food lifeline, washington’s largest hunger relief program. if you’re interested in getting involved, be sure to keep an eye on their calendar of upcoming events.
